Dallas Video Production Company Answers the Question: Should I Film In-Studio or On-Location?

Should I Film In-Studio or On-Location?

Factors including: budget, on-camera participants, creative vision, and tone all effect your decision on whether to film in-studio or on-location. Some shoots lend themselves to documentary-style location shoots, while others require studio setups to successfully achieve a client’s vision.

Choosing When to Film On-Location

If your video will contain primarily interviews, you may find that your budget, tone, and messaging will benefit from an on-location shoot. On-location filming can lend a genuine tone to your video. The audience is able to picture themselves interacting with the on-camera participants. Businesses also often find that it is easier to film on-location than to schedule time for their interviewees to travel to a studio.

The promotional videos for SMU’s Higher Education Department are a great example of effective on-location filming. Frozen Fire captured the footage in several locations around campus. The end result was several videos that offer valuable information to perspective students, while portraying the experience of the attending classes on campus.  Want to check them out? When Should I Film In-Studio?

If your creative vision requires a fashion or runway-styled shoot, a custom background, or special effects, a studio setup will probably be the best option for you. Custom white backgrounds and green screens require even lighting and lots of space…especially if your video will include full body shots. Studio setups give you complete control over your  lighting and audio setups. When you are filming in a studio, you do not have to run multiple takes because of environmental sounds like: phones, lawnmowers and air conditioners. Frozen Fire produced broadcast commercials for Clothes Mentor recently that involved both on-location and in-studio setups.
